The Kid

Someone has discovered a new sport. And someone is damn good.

Someone has discovered a new sport. And someone is damn good.

Each week, without fail, someone new shows up to play with us. It’s the lure of the game, of course.

Earlier this winter, a couple of kids were playing soccer on the turf field at Fairfax High School. Naturally, Mike McCarthy gave them no option but to drop what they were doing and play a match with us. Neal was one of the kids. He’s an eighth grader at Lanier Middle School and a soccer stud. But there was something about football that brought him back. When he’s not playing soccer, he’s on the pitch with us.

And here’s the thing: He’s damn good. It’s like he grew up playing. Everything comes naturally to him, including soloing.

And here’s another thing: He makes some of us who’ve been playing for more than five years look, um…like we haven’t been playing five years. We’ll chalk it up to age. And Neal being Neal.

We had a another great match last week, as evidenced below by photographer Gary Dize. Thanks for shooting for us, Gary! (If you want to see Gary’s other work — he shoots for the Nationals and local bands, among many other subjects, check out dizephotos.com).
